Four Issues Related To Dental Bonding

Probably the quickest and least expensive way to clear up minor defects in your teeth and perk up your smile is dental bonding. This article will discuss four concerns about dental bonding.

1. Bonding is for small imperfections and minor defects only.  If you have structural issues with your teeth, you are not a candidate for dental bonding.  Those with the best outcome are people who meet at least two criteria.

TIP 1:  Be a nonsmoker.  Smoking interferes with virtually any cosmetic dental procedure you might be considering.  Expect a less than optimal outcome if you insist on smoking.

TIP 2: Have realistic expectations about what the bonding procedure will accomplish for you.  The best way to be sure you are realistic is to talk with the dentist before making a procedure appointment.  You may want to spend some research time on the internet. 

2. Dental bonding usually takes only one visit.  The dentist will roughen your tooth and then apply a conditioning solution.  This solution will produce a remarkably strong glue when mixed with the bonding substance.  The actual bonding resin will then be applied to the tooth.

TIP 1:  The dentist will use either a high-intensity light source or an additional chemical to strengthen the bonding resin onto the tooth.  These are not painful.

TIP 2:  Considerable shaping and contouring is needed to make the bonding resin look like a real tooth.  Color choices are available so the best match can be made.  Smoothing and polishing can be a little noisy, but it is painless as well.

3. Keeping bonded teeth looking good is up to the patient.  Brushing and flossing must be done at least twice a day for best results.  Ask your dentist for specific recommendations about tooth paste or brushes.

Tip 1: Slice or chop foods that are hard and could put stress on the bond.  This will include carrots, jicama or apples.

TIP 2: Avoid chewing on hard objects such as jawbreaker candy, pencils or pens.  If you chew your fingernails, stop.  The nail is a hard enough substance to cause tension against the bond. 

TIP 3: Do not open tab-top cans, bottles or nuts with your teeth.

4. Be sure you and the dentist are in agreement about what happens if the bonding fails or if you are not pleased with your results.

TIP 1:  The best way to be certain you and the dentist agree is to ask direct questions.  If the dentist offers no satisfaction, look for another dentist.  Most will agree to perform rebonding or repairs within a specific period of time.

Bonding restoration comes with some degree of risk.  It isn’t as permanent as some other types of restoration, but will serve you well if you take good care of it.
