Dental veneers can solve many dental problems, including worn enamel, wear due to age or uneven teeth. This article will describe key points related to veneers.
1. Dental veneers are made either of porcelain or composite resin. They are cemented over the surface of a given tooth. Their application is considered a cosmetic dental procedure.
TIP 1: Because veneers are custom made to fit each tooth, the cost can be high. Be absolutely certain that veneers are your best choice and what you really want. For minor imperfections, bonding may be a better, less expensive option.
2. In addition to correcting minor anatomical problems with teeth, veneers actually have a functional purpose. They protect the tooth’s surface and are sometimes used instead of a crown, which requires much greater tooth preparation.
TIP 1: You may be able to avoid a root canal by opting for a veneer rather than a crown.
TIP 2: Veneers are cosmetic dental procedures that definitely need a sense of artistry from the dentist who designs and the lab technician who actually makes the veneers.
3. The dentist will need to do some reshaping of your teeth to make them ready for veneers. You will be given, at the very least, a local anesthetic and a bur will be used to grind your teeth.
TIP 1: If you are even slightly dental-phobic, ask about conscious sedation and visual or auditory distraction therapy. Many dentists are very happy to provide additional anesthesia.
TIP 2: Remember that the bur is slightly noisy, but noise does not mean pain.
TIP 3: Some dentists will prescribe an anti-anxiety drug such as Valium or Ativan that you can take about 30 to 60 minutes before your appointment.
4. You may need to change some food choices or hygiene habits after your veneers are in place. Your dentist may ask you to wear a night appliance such as a bite tray at night. If you suffer from bruxism, (grinding your teeth while you sleep), you will shorten the life of your veneers by not following the dentist’s instructions. You may also be cautioned about eating very hard foods or chewing on your pens or pencils.
TIP 1: Remember that cola drinks and coffee or tea will eventually stain the veneers. Good oral care is extremely important.
TIP 2: Nicotine will not only stain the veneers, but some dental professionals believe that chemicals in cigarettes actually contribute to brittleness and cracking of the veneers themselves.
If you find that whitening or bonding will not solve your dental issues, veneers are a viable alternative. You can expect porcelain to last up to fifteen years, while resin will last from five to seven years.
