Four Points To Consider Before Getting Your Teeth Whitened

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest cosmetic dental techniques and produces noticeable results the fastest. Different procedures are available. Read on to learn the best options for teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest cosmetic dental techniques and produces noticeable results the fastest.  Different procedures are available.   Read on to learn the best options for teeth whitening.

1. Teeth bleaching is affordable and reliable.  Whitening is probably the most common of all the cosmetic dental procedures in play today.  It produces effective results about 75 % of the time, but a competent cosmetic dentist can produce better results.  Bleaching is one of the safest and most affordable options used for improving the looks of a smile.

TIP1: Having your teeth whitened by a cosmetic dentist is more costly than picking up the latest concoction at the local drug store, but some of the over the counter products can be unpleasant tasting and potentially harmful to the enamel of your teeth.  Find an accredited cosmetic dentist to do the job.

TIP 2: Bleaching is not an invasive procedure.  Expect no cutting or drilling.  Instead expect use of a hydrogen or carbamide peroxide gel applied directly to the teeth.

TIP 3: Bleaching is rarely painful, although you should expect to feel a warm sensation from the action of the peroxide.  Your pain tolerance will have much to do with how you experience the bleaching procedure.  There may be some inflammation following the procedure, but an over the counter anti-inflammatory will help.  Check with the dentist to see if he/she has a preference for the anti-inflammatory he/she wants you to use.

3. The procedure may be as short as 45 minutes or as long as two hours.  It depends on which of the three most common procedures is used.  In the dental office, a laser is added after the gel is applied.  This is an excellent option for individual teeth that need whitening.

TIP 1: For a tooth that is severely discolored, ask the dentist about “walking bleach.”  This is a technique that is used to place the bleaching gel inside the tooth.  Especially useful for teeth that discolor after root canal work, walking bleach permits the tooth to continue whitening outside the dentist’s office, with no effort from the patient.

4. The dentist may offer you the option of bleaching your teeth at home.  There are two distinct advantages of dentist-supervised home whitening.  The first is that the bleaching gel can be individualized.  It’s not a one strength fits all option.  The second advantage is that the dentist will make a mouth tray from impressions of your own teeth.  This makes the whitening process more efficient.Tooth Whitening Tray

TIP 1: Be sure to follow all instructions the dentist gives you if home bleaching is used.  Ask specific questions to make certain you completely understand not only the instructions, but also any possibilities for side effects.

TIP 2:  Whitening at home may take anywhere from several days to several weeks to take effect.  It will last up to three years or longer depending on your own dental hygiene habits.  While you are using the at-home gel, it’s a perfect time to change your dental hygiene if it needs improving.

Very few people have absolutely white teeth.  Don’t expect a Barbie doll look from whitening, but you will see a definite color change result.  Ladies, remember to re-evaluate your lipstick color choice after teeth whitening.  Your lipstick can definitely enhance the look of your teeth.  If you choose the right dentist for you, the result will make you smile.
