Five Reasons Why Bleaching Is Harmful For Your Teeth

Less than ten years ago, a dentist was questioned by one out of ten patients about the process of whitening. Elaborate studies of recent years show that now every one out of five patients inquires about it. Not only this, but bleaching is said to be the most popular treatment these days with patients as old as sixty years old opting for it.

Before and after bleachingHowever, whitening gels available in markets are a different story. Though popular with customers, they pose a threat to you too.  Bursts of pain can be as temporary as a few minutes leading up to headaches, or prolonged enough to render you physically weak.

The following are the side effects of excessive bleaching that can occur if individuals do not pay heed to instructions:

1. Introduction to tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is a bane. It is hurtful and creates trouble in eating. Imagine you not being able to have your food or anything because the weakened enamel of your tooth refuses to play its role in tearing and chewing. Tooth sensitivity is like a decline in your tooth’s health. Food items as flimsy as ice-cream will hurt your tooth, making you clutch your jaw in pain.

2. Gum irritation is bound to make you irritable too. It should be noted that gum irritation is not in response to the bleaching gel but rather to the inadequacies of the process. It most commonly is subsequent to a mouthpiece tray not being used properly. Ill-fitting trays are painful as well. In many cases, gum irritation is considered to be a temporary side effect. It disappears within a couple of days or upon the completion of the treatment.

3. Its problems can go as deep as the root. Not everyone has a perfect set of teeth. Minor imperfections are present here and there that do not pose as a serious threat to oral hygiene or aesthetics for that matter. However, bleaching seeps through these flaws and attacks. Chemicals can navigate themselves into unfilled cavities and cracked teeth that can cause extremely painful internal damage. Add to this pain and suffering the threat of root canal. The pain is likely to subside in a few weeks but oral hygiene’s costs are to be calculated as well.

4. Bleaching, over a period of time, can result in an uneven colored smile. Excessive bleaching, be it a not-so-safe process done at home with an over-the-counter product or a treatment done by a professional, is bound to be detrimental to the appearance of your teeth. It can result in an uneven bright and dull smile that is not going to be attractive.

5. Bleaching makes your enamel go blue. Careless bleaching or risky whitening can end make you end up with bluish enamels.
