Do's And Don’ts Of The Home Teeth Whitening Products

At home teeth whitening procedures are considered rather safe among dentists. Still it is advisable that some minimal precautions are observed prior to using at home teeth whitening products.

The do’s and don’ts of this process are:

• Do’s :

1. Get your teeth examined and cleaned by a dentist before using any at home teeth whitening product.
2. Start the whitening process gradually. For the first day, wear the bleaching trays for only 1-2 hours, in order to determine the sensitivity level of your teeth.
3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Store the whitening gel in fridge to prolong its shelf life

• Don’ts:

1. Fillings, crowns, dentures and other restorations.

Materials used in dental restorations cannot be whitened. Thus, using a whitening agent on restored teeth will results in uneven whitening.

2. Devitalized teeth.

Teeth whitening works only on live teeth and will not lighten teeth that has undergone root canal treatment.

3. Pregnancy and teens.

It’s recommended that teeth whitening procedures not be used by pregnant or lactating women. No adverse effects are known but it is best to avoid it as a precautionary measure.
Also, it is advised that under 18’s do not use teeth whitening.

4.  Sensitive teeth and allergies.

Individuals who have sensitive teeth and gums or receding gums should consult with their dentist prior to using a teeth whitening system.
Anyone allergic to hydrogen peroxide should not use a bleaching product.

5.  Gum disease, worn enamel, cavities, and exposed roots.

People with gum disease or worn enameled teeth are usually discouraged from having a teeth whitening procedure. Likewise it’s advisable to get the cavities treated before undergoing any bleaching process, as the whitening solutions may penetrate into the existing decay or the inner areas of the tooth causing teeth sensitivity. Also, since the exposed roots lack an enamel layer, whitening products won’t work on them.

6.  Unrealistic expectations.

At home teeth whitening treatments are no magic, so, don’t expect miracles. Smokers need refrain from continued smoking, especially during the bleaching process. A realistic goal is to achieve a reasonable level of whiteness and maintaining a natural appearance to your teeth.

7.  Darkly stained teeth.

The degree of teeth staining determines the response of the teeth to bleaching. Staining caused by tetracycline that is typically blue grey in color, is rather difficult to lighten and may require months of at home teeth whitening treatments.

8. Avoid eating or drinking anything right after whitening procedure. Especially foods/drinks that cause staining such as coffee, tea, etc. should be avoided.

9. Bushing teeth just prior to whitening is not suggested as it may cause abrasion and sensitivity.
