Is a whitening toothpaste a viable option for your child? The answer to that question depends on the child and his or her individual situation.
Often times people are in need of a tooth whitening system because of the foods they eat, things they drink and their personal habits. When considering tooth whitening, the question for everyone, including children, is whether or not tooth whitening will be beneficial to someone whose habits have already contributed to their teeth’s stained appearance.
Situations will vary however here are some things to consider:
1. Why are my child’s teeth discolored?
There are many factors which can contribute to tooth staining in children. Staining may be the cause of dietary habits, plaque and debris, vitamins which contain iron and poor oral hygiene habits. Other staining can occur in children from events that occurred during the tooth development. Such occurrences can be the product of certain medications, illnesses which caused recurrent fevers, certain medical conditions, excessive use of fluoride supplements and mouth trauma.
2. Can tooth whitening toothpaste work for my child?
Like adults, children want attractive white smiles too! It can be important for them, especially at a time in their life when they may be feeling self conscious about their appearance. If your child shows an interest in the appearance of their teeth, this can be an excellent time to not only correct the problem, but also put them on the right track for taking good care of their teeth.
3. How do I know if it’s safe?
There is a lot of information out there regarding the safety and general use of tooth whitening toothpaste. Specific information can be researched online or you can speak to your child’s dentist regarding important information that you should know when choosing a tooth whitening toothpaste for your child. His or her dentist may also have some product suggestions for your child to try.
4. Can long term use damage my child’s teeth?
Long term use can damage anyone’s teeth in some situations. Children don’t always follow manufacturer directions like an adult would and so it’s important for you to keep track of how your child is using the product. Regular monitoring can help your child avoid damaging their teeth further. Do not allow your child to use this product long term unless recommended by a dentist or manufacturer packaging says that long term use is okay.
5. How will I know if it’s working?
It’s pretty simple. If you can see results, it’s working. Sometimes when we look at people every day, we tend to not notice subtle changes in their appearance. If you think this might be an issue for you, make it fun for your child and take his or her picture each day. Monitor their use of the whitening toothpaste and keep a journal. Make sure you speak to your child about any negative effects they might be suffering from. Discontinue use immediately if such problems arise.
