Negative Side Effects Of Tooth Whitening Toothpaste

There are a lot of positive reasons why using a tooth whitening toothpaste can be a smart option for today’s busy consumer. Whether or not use of such a product is right for you is dependent on a variety of things, which I will discuss below.

Anytime we use a new product, particularly something which may cause a chemical change, we run the risk of having negative side effects.  You can’t always know what’s about to come, but you can take some basic precautions to avoid having a negative or opposite outcome.

Speak to pharmacistYour situation is unique to you, but there are some things you can consider when searching for effective whitening toothpaste:

1.  Are there negative side effects of using tooth whitening toothpaste?

Negative side effects can be tooth sensitivity, gum irritation and additional tooth staining.  If these become issues for the user, he or she may want to switch to a whitening toothpaste which is specially formulated for sensitive teeth.  These toothpastes not only help sensitivity, but can protect from future sensitivity problems.

2.   How do I know if I’m having an allergic reaction?

As with any new product, it’s important you follow the manufacturer directions and check the ingredients to make sure the product doesn’t contain an ingredient you already know you are allergic to.  Keeping a journal or notes on daily use may help you pinpoint allergies which may become apparent with persistent use.

3.   Are there less abrasive tooth whitening toothpastes out there?

There are many products to choose from both online and in your local grocery store or pharmacy.  If you don’t want to make an appointment to talk to your dentist about which product might work best for you, you can speak to a pharmacist at your local drug store.  They are typically very knowledgeable about which are the best products to use on the market today.

4.   I’m afraid if I spend less money, I’ll damage my teeth.

It’s a common myth amongst many consumers that if you spend more money on a product, you are getting a more effective product.  That’s not always the case.  If you’re unsure, do an online research and make product comparisons.  Call the manufacturers or speak to your dentist for further help.

5.   How can I test a new product for bad reactions?

First of all, always be sure to follow manufacturer suggestions and instructions for use.  Don’t overuse or abuse the product.  Taking those few simple steps can help you avoid having a bad reaction to a new product.  Pay close attention to any negative changes which may be experienced while using a new product.  Speak to your dentist regarding possible side effects and do internet research to find out about possible problems a user may have when using a tooth whitening toothpaste.
